It was one of the joys of his life to come home and see Amy running over the grass to greet him. Timothy knew parents weren’t supposed to have favourites, but it just seemed that Amy and he had a special wavelength. She loved sports as he did and they would happily spend hours playing catch, or taking it in turns to shoot for goal.

If only everything in life were so simple. Somehow his life had gone awry and now it seemed beyond repair. He remembered back to his university days when life seemed to be stretching out before him, there had seemed so much hope and endless possibilities.

Now he was trapped. He had married the woman he loved and yet he had cheated on her. She didn’t know yet, but the evidence of his adultery was living in his brother’s house. He fathered a little girl with his sister in law. But that hadn’t been the start; Antonio was where it all began.

He had been so naïve, reading people had never been his forte, but he had misjudged Antonio completely. Before he had realised he was in over his head, he had been aiding and abetting crooks. There was no way out now. They knew where he lived and knew about his family. He had to keep playing their game, for now at least.

Timothy’s twin sons were growing fast. Timothy felt very proud of the Wintersmith name and wanted it to continue, so he determined on making one of his two boys his heir. Almost from the moment they were born he had chosen Byron. Byron had the startling Wintersmith eyes that Timothy instinctively linked to success. As he grew up seemed to look much more like his father than Bailey.

Timothy did his best to leave his work behind when he came home, making a mental effort to forget all the day’s events and focus on being a father. He was mostly successful, although there were times when he was very grumpy or even angry and no one would know why. On the whole the children were growing up happily. Amy and Abigail were both working hard at their school work and achieving good grades.

So much so that they were offered the chance to go to the local private school. A meal with the headmaster sealed the deal and the girls looked very smart in their new uniforms.

They spent a lot of time hanging out together and had gotten in the habit of fishing in the small pond at the back of the house. The pond seemed to contain as much rubbish as fish, much to the little girls’ annoyance.

Timothy looked on his family with pride, glad that none of them had the slightest idea of the trouble he had landed them in. Recently he had begun to formulate a plan, a way to escape Antonio’s clutches. It would cost him everything, he knew that and yet he loved his family enough to give up anything for them, even if it mean’t sacrificing himself. The time wasn’t yet ripe, but the day would soon come when he would have his revenge.

As he left the room, she sat on the edge of the bed readying herself for another contraction and thinking back over the last few years to distract herself from the pain.

Here she was pregnant again, except this time she knew Harry was the father of her baby. It had been a difficult decision to keep Cecily’s parentage a secret. But she knew if she had been honest with Harry and Lucy it would have torn the Wintersmith family apart. Instead she had decided Timothy was right; that Harry would be Cecily’s father in all but genetics, it would be Harry who brought her up. It hadn’t been easy and she had to deal with the guilt, but she hadn’t seen any alternative.

Harry had been a very hands on father with Cecily. He spent time talking to her and teaching her to walk, she was the apple of his eye. Anne knew she should be glad he was so fond of her, but it just made her feel more guilty for her deception.

Their cat Olive was also keen on their young daughter and let herself be hugged and pulled around.

If only Olive could get on as well with Puddles, Anne mused. But they just seemed to annoy each other and this culminated with Anne witnessing a fight in the kitchen.

Everything was driven from her head as she felt another contraction and for a time she focused on her breathing. As the pain dulled she thought of her daugther. It has been a big relief that as Cecily grew she began to look like her mum, her parentage couldn’t been read in her face. Anne didn’t know how she might change as she grew, but she fervently hoped that she would not grow to look more like Timothy.

When Anne had found herself pregnant this time, she had felt that in someway, by giving Harry a child of his own she was making up for Cecily’s parentage.

The ambulance arrived, she could hear the sirens and the sound of voices downstairs. Soon they would be whisked off to hospital.

Anne held her little son. They had named him Malcolm and he had the bright Wintersmith eyes. She smiled down at him feeling the joy that he was Harry’s child and enjoying how much his father would dote on him.

Harry had come to pick them up from the hospital in the renevated car. Harry had finally finished restoring the wreck and Anne was impressed.

He had even started hanging out at Will’s garage where he came into contact with other people who liked to tinker.

Anne loved the new car, but wondered if it was big enough now they had two kids, but she hadn’t the heart to suggest they sell it.

Life seemed to be going well for Harry and Anne, only Anne knew the turmoil of her heart and however much she tried to justify her actions she knew deep down that she could never be truly peaceful until she had confessed the truth.

Anne sat in the bath trying to relax, but aware that she was listening intently in case she heard the letterbox. The paternity test results were due any day now and for the last few days she had been anxious all morning until the postman had been.

The only sound she heard was that of her husband’s footsteps as he came upstairs. He entered the bathroom and seeing her said, “Are you still in here? You better get a move on, our guests will be arriving soon.”

Anne looked up questioningly, “Guests?”

“Yes,” said Harry smiling back. “I saw Lucy yesterday and invited her and Timothy round for a BBQ.”

“Oh,” said Anne, unsure of how to reply and then continued, “Are all our nieces and nephews coming too?”
“No, just grown ups, the children are being left with their nanny.”

Harry left her to get dressed and she did so quickly, wondering how awkward today would be. She had hardly chatted to Lucy since she had found out she was pregnant. She just felt so uncomfortable around her. She was supposed to be Lucy’s friend and yet she had slept with her husband and worse than that Cecily might be his daugther.

An hour later Harry ushered in his guests, Anne was working away at the BBQ and used this as an excuse not to greet them. Her heart hammered as she heard their voices coming through the house and she stared intently at her steaks. Harry got them drinks and brought down Cecily to be admired. He beamed with pride as he showed her off to his brother and sister-in-law.

Lucy played with Cecily whilst Timothy looked uncomfortable. Once Lucy and Harry were deep in conversation about Cecily, Timothy sidled over to speak with Anne.

“Still no news?” he asked quietly.

Anne shook her head, not looking at him. There seemed to be nothing else to say and Timothy drifted off to look round the garden deep in thought, wondering how long this torture would last before they would find out one way or the other.

Anne focused on her BBQ until she realised Harry was addressing her and she turned round to see him striding towards her, a letter in hand. She didn’t trust herself to say anything so she waited impatiently for him to speak.

“There’s a letter from the hospital here addressed to you, I thought Cecily had had all the tests she needed?”

Anne took the letter off him muttering, “Oh it’s probably something they forgot to send us to ages ago. I need to nip to the toilet. Can you look after the BBQ for me?”

She turned round not waiting for his answer and walked swiftly inside. Once she was out of sight she ran upstairs, her heart racing and her mind in confusion.

It was here at last. She stared down at the letter hesistating, almost afraid to find out who the father was. But a moment later she remembered the stress of not knowing, surely it would be better to have an answer either way?

She tore open the letter and scanned down the page trying to take in what she read. A small cry escaped her, it couldn’t be, surely it couldn’t be, but it was. The test revealed Timothy as Cecily’s father. Her head reeled and for a minute she thought she might faint. She had always told herself it was Harry’s and done her best to believe this was the case and now here it was in black and white.

She heard footsteps coming up the stairs and she hastily pushed the letter into the back of one of her drawers.

Harry came in and at the sight of her, he looked concerned. “Anne are you okay?” Anne tried to smile and said “I felt really dizzy all of a sudden so I came and sat down, perhaps I am just hungry?”

Harry’s eyes fell on the crumpled envelope on the floor and he asked “What did the hospital want?”
Anne without looking at him replied “Nothing, just wanted us to complete a survey on our experience with the hospital, I will do it later.”

“Oh okay,” he said and continued, “How about you come down? Food is almost ready. ”

“Sure,” said Anne not really knowing what she was saying, but knowing that she had to let Timothy know somehow.

Harry helped her down the stairs and sat her on the patio table explaining, “Anne’s had a funny turn, so she is going to sit quietly there whilst we get the food ready.” Lucy offered her assistance and handed Cecily to Timothy.

He turned to look at Anne, Cecily in his arms and Anne’s pale white face gave him the truth.

He looked at her imploringly, hoping against hope now that he was wrong and saw her nod slowly at him and look at Cecily. His eyes left Anne and he looked down into the face of his daughter.

That one stupid night was going to change their lives forever, but what would they do now? Tell their unsuspecting spouses or continue to live a lie and hope that the truth would never come to light?

Anne had been relieved that Cecily didn’t have the Wintersmith eyes. She would have felt them staring up at her reproachfully. Yet as it was she was still often broken out of her happy reverie to the rememberance of the mess she was in, she still didn’t know whether Harry or Timothy was Cecily’s father. She let out a big sigh, with Harry out at an interview, today was to be the day they would take the paternity test. At last she would know, if only it could be the answer she wanted, she would be able to put the past behind her.

Hearing the doorbell she put Cecily back in her cot and slipped downstairs to answer the door. It was Timothy,

“Are you ready?” he asked simply.

“I just need to grab a few things, how about you get Cecily into her car seat.”

Timothy walked up the stairs and into the nursery. It was a pretty room, he hadn’t seen it till now. The guilt he felt had kept him at a distance, though he had heard Harry talk of it proudly. Cecily was awake and looking up at him when he walked in, he picked her up and found himself scrutinising her closely to see who she resembled most, but she was too young to show any striking features.

Holding her he wondered if this was his new little baby daughter and then felt angry at himself. He shouldn’t think such things, Harry was her father, that was what today would prove. It was what both Anne and he needed it to prove. Then they could forget about that night and move on.

Taking Cecily downstairs he placed her in her the car seat and stood waiting for Anne, mulling over again that bad decision that had led to all this heartache and uncertainty. Looking up he saw Anne, it was time to go.

Two hours later they arrived home and Timothy helped Anne and Cecily indoors. “I can’t believe we have to wait a week to find out,” he said. Anne didn’t reply. He had been repeating the same thing over and over all the way home.

He followed her indoors and as Anne put Cecily to bed, Timothy stared out at the garden lost in thought. When she came downstairs he said “Let’s talk, we might not have another chance,” then launching straight in he asked, ”What are we going to do if it isn’t Harry’s, have you thought about that?”

Anne sighed heavily and sank into a chair replying “I have been trying not to think about it.”

“Seriously though Anne we need to decide now, it’s not like I can just pop over for a private chat anytime.”

Anne considered him and Timothy went on “Would you tell him it is was mine?”

“What else could I do, pretend that he is the father and hope he never finds out the truth?”

“He would be the father, what’s genetics? It would be Harry that would be bringing Cecily up.”

“It’s not the same, it would be a lie.”

“I know,” replied Timothy quietly, “But what’s the other option, we tell Harry and Lucy and hope they understand? Why would they believe it was just one night rather than we had been having an affair all along, with our history you couldn’t blame them for not believing us. That would be both our marriages ruined. “

Anne considered, “I just don’t know what to do. I need time to think.”

Timothy replied, “Well we have a week.”

“I know,” replied Anne, “I just don’t know whether I can go through life living a lie like that, it’s been so hard over the past year, seeing Harry so excited and not knowing if the baby is his.”

Timothy watched her for a minute and then sighing replied,

“I better be getting back, hopefully this is all just hypothetical and we shall soon find out we have been worrying for nothing. Let me know as soon as you know okay?”

“Sure.” said Anne and watched Timothy leave.

She went to check on sleeping Cecily and wondered what the future held for her and her little girl.

He watched Anne walk round the house and thought back over the past few months.

He was very worried about Anne, she had seemed understandably very upset that her Mum had died and had withdrawn inside herself. She had been given time off her work, but this seemed to make her worse. She sat at home dwelling on the past. So he decided that they should move. Living in the house where her Mum had died couldn’t be helping, besides they could afford to upgrade.

Things were going well for him now, his band had two top ten hits and the money was rolling in. He had looked round for a suitable place and having found this house had taken her round it. She had seemed to revive in a new place and he had made an offer straight away. He hoped that the new place would start a new phase of their life and she would not be constantly dwelling on the past, but looking forward to the birth of their child.

Harry did his best over the next few weeks to get more interested in her surroundings. He bought another cat; Olive.

She was as different from the thin white Puddles as she could be.

Olive was a stout brown dappled cat. Anne seemed to take to her well. She more friendly than Puddles and liked to follow them round, even trying to get titbits from the table at meal times.

Harry found their new spacious home had its advantages. Whilst on an album photo shoot he had had been pretending to be a mechanic fixing up an old car. It had piqued his interest and the new house had a little garage attached.

He felt like he needed a hobby away from his music and enjoyed tinkering around on his car in his garage. Although not always very successfully.

With the big day approaching Harry had worked on the baby’s room and was quite proud of the result.

Staring at his handiwork and the little cot that they had bought, Harry couldn’t help feel excited that he would very soon be a father.

Anne looked up to see her Mum’s concerned expression and replied, “I’m fine.” Vyn sat down next to her daugther and continued, “You never were a good liar when you were a little girl and you haven’t improved with age. Come on; tell your old Mum what’s wrong. Is it morning sickness?”

Anne could see that her Mum wasn’t going to give up and replied, “No, that’s not too bad so far, it’s just being pregnant. I hadn’t planned this for now. There were things I wanted to do first.” She hoped that would be enough for her Mum, she couldn’t tell her that one of her main worries was that Harry wasn’t the father of her baby.

“I can see that, your job is just taking off isn’t it? But it will still be there after you return from maternity leave. Whether it was planned or not, it’s happening, you’re going to be a mother.”

Anne smiled, she hadn’t really thought of that, she had been too busy worrying to realise that she was going to be a Mum. For a few seconds she forgot all her worries and enjoyed the thought of holding her baby. But then the worries crowded back in and she realised how amazing this would be if this had been her and Harry’s first child, rather than the mess she was now in. She sighed and got up. Her Mum looked at her searchingly “Are you sure that’s all that’s worrying you?” she asked.

Anne looked away and answered “Yes, I better get ready, see you tonight.”

But that day at work she thought over her conversation and part of her wished she had shared with her mother her real worry. She knew her mother would be disappointed and yet if anyone could give her good advice it would be her. It would be a relief for Anne to tell someone, carrying this around inside her and trying to pretend to be happy was so draining. By lunchtime she had decided that she would tell her Mum when she got home.

She came home, her heart pounding in her chest, she still wasn’t sure if this was the right course of action, what if her Mum told Harry? But she felt she needed to tell someone and her Mum would love her no matter what, maybe she would even understand?

Walking into the house she was surprised that her Mum wasn’t watching television, but she walked through to the annexe assuming that she must have gone to have a lie down. Opening the door to the bedroom she walked in and found her.

Three hours later she was sitting at the kitchen table staring ahead. Harry walked in the room and sat down next to her. He spoke quietly, “I have spoken to the doctor, they are going to want to do an autopsy, just to clarify the reason she died. The doctor thinks it was her heart but they want to be sure as she had been in such good health.” Anne nodded slowly still staring ahead, but she felt the tears silently rolling down her face. Harry pulled her close and held her tight. “I will look after you Anne, I know I have been so busy and preoccupied lately, but I do love you ever so much and I will be around more often now, I promise.” The tears increased, what was she going to do now? Harry was all she had left; she would have to keep her secret.

http://wintersmith.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/chapter-76-%e2%80%93-a-new-home/

Timothy replied “Well let’s not panic, it could be Harry’s.”

“But what if it isn’t?” wailed Anne, “Maybe I should come clean and tell him everything, maybe he will understand?”

“You think?” asked Timothy drily, then continuing in a kinder tone he said, “I’m so sorry. It was me that started it, you were being such a good friend and after all I was going through I just reached out to you.”

“But I didn’t stop it did I?” replied Anne, “No I just let it happen, it was good to be wanted, Harry’s been so busy lately.”

They sat for a few minutes staring into space, both wishing that they had made different choices that night.

“Anne?” asked Timothy suddenly uneasy, “You aren’t still in love with me are you? You do know it was a mistake?”

Anne smiled thinly, “No, I love Harry, it was just a stupid, stupid mistake.”

Another silence followed before Timothy continued, “You know if Lucy were to try and leave me I don’t know how safe she would be. The people I work for are not nice people and they have secrets they would kill to keep.” he said seriously.

“But she doesn’t know anything about them,” replied Anne.

“But Antonio doesn’t know that and he would want to be sure. She can’t know, Anne, she just can’t. If anything were to happen to her….” he let the sentence tail off, his face looking anguished.

Anne made a decision.

“I guess we just keep it to ourselves then, once the baby is born we can do a test and see who the father is.”

Timothy’s face showed relief and smiling gratefully at Anne he said, “Thanks. I think this is the right decision.” With this decided he left soon afterwards.

Anne watched him go, glad to be alone to try and think it all through. Her life felt like it was tumbling down around her. Now she had to live lying to her husband to stand a chance of keeping their happy life together. She already felt tired after trying to deal with his enthusiasm at the baby, how would she cope with the next nine months of his joy, knowing that the child might not even be his? Anne sighed heavily, she had made her bed as the saying went and now she had to lie in it.

He loved performing and slowly his band were becoming known and gathering a fan base.

Despite his assurances to Anne however, he was still very busy, but he felt that it would calm down soon and they would be able to spend proper time together again.

He dashed up the stairs and grabbed his wallet from the bedside table and found Anne sitting on the bed holding something. A second glance showed him that she seemed to be staring into the distance, oblivious to his presence.

He came up to her and asked, “Anne honey, are you okay?”

Anne looked up with an anxious face and said, “Umm, I don’t know.”

“What’s that you have in your hand?” asked Harry and leaning closer to see he suddenly exclaimed, “Anne, is that what I think it is! Are we? I mean are you?”

Anne nodded slowly and Harry picked her up, hugging her tight.

Letting her go, he saw her worried expression and after a moment’s reflection he said, “I know we weren’t planning to have kids yet and you are still finding you feet as a chef, but you did want kids at some point right?” Harry watched her, wondering how it had happened that they have never talked through such an important subject.

Anne nodded slowly and replied “It’s all such a shock that’s all.”

Harry hugged her again beaming, he was so excited at the thought of becoming a father. “I wish I could stay longer but I should be going, I only popped back to get my wallet.”

As he went downstairs, Anne not knowing what to do with herself, found herself following in his wake. Halfway down the stairs she heard him greet someone. Before she had time to wonder who he was talking to she heard Timothy reply, “Hello, I came to see how you were, I haven’t seen much of you lately.”

Anne moved down the stairs until she could see them both clearly, her heart hammering in her chest and heard Harry reply,

“Well I am just off now sadly, but before I go I have something to tell you, I am sure Anne won’t mind you knowing as you are family, Anne’s pregnant!”

Anne saw Timothy looked shocked and then collect himself and offer his congratulations to his brother. Harry didn’t seem to notice anything amiss and shook the proffered hand in his and saying one last goodbye rushed off to the waiting car.

Anne drifted out the door and she and Timothy stood side by side on the doorstep waving goodbye to Harry. As soon as Harry was out of sight, the smile left Timothy’s face and he turned to Anne and asked urgently, “Anne, is it mine?”

Not hearing a response he went upstairs to change for his evening job. As he finished dressing he heard movement in the bathroom and the door opening.

Harry walked out to meet Anne, grinning away. He kissed her and said, “I am glad you are here, welcome back. I have some really exciting news to tell you.”

Anne looked expectantly at him and he continued,

“We have a record deal! At the gig we did there was an agent watching in the crowd and we’ve been signed. It’s happening at last, how cool is that?”

Anne smiled weakly in return and Harry continued.

“Look I know you were upset I couldn’t come with you, but this is precisely the reason I didn’t. I knew the chances were that this would turn out to be an important gig. I will make it up to you. This is a really good thing for us, because now I can quit my job and just focus on the music. We will get to spend more time together from now on. I am going to hand my notice in today.”

Anne smiled in response and said, “Well done. I’m not upset, just tired from the travelling.”

Harry beamed back at Anne, “Well I’d best be going, although I hate saying goodbye when I have only just seen you again after three days.” He pulled her close and kissed her again before grabbing his coat and rushing out of the house.

Anne went and sat at the dining table staring blankly ahead. It was as Harry said it would be, he was making a name for himself. Now they would see more of each other, she should be happy. She would have been so happy if…The remembrance of the holiday came back to her mind and she tried to push it away. What had happened there was a mistake and she had to try to forget it, no good would come of talking about it. She and Timothy had agreed it had all been a mistake and finally she knew for sure it was Harry she loved. Timothy had been like a fantasy, she had built her dreams round him and yet she was much more suited to Harry and she knew this now.

She loved Harry very dearly and she would not jeopardise it by telling him of what happened whilst she has been away. Her conscience pricked at her uncomfortably, but she did her best to silence it reasoning that bringing it all up would only cause Harry and her pain and it wasn’t like she had been having an affair. No it was just a mistake and would best be forgotten by all parties as she and Timothy had agreed.

http://wintersmith.wordpress.com/2009/04/26/chapter-73-%e2%80%93-the-complication/

Timothy showed her round the little place. It was small but comfortable and they had their own little bit of beach. Anne stood in the front room staring out at the waves, she felt relieved to be out of the hotel and to be somewhere so comfortable.

Timothy and Anne found they had a lot of fun together, it was almost like being young again and Timothy was able to put aside his troubles and really enjoy himself.

They spent their days swimming and having fun. Neither really felt in the mood for sight-seeing, instead they relived their youth together and became the best of friends again.

On the last night Anne cooked them a sumptuous meal and they sat down together with their usual friendly banter. Afterwards they sat on the sofa drinking tea and talking over all that had been happening to them since they left University. When Anne asked Timothy about his work he suddenly went quiet and when she looked closely at him she was surprised to see a tear running down his cheek.

“Timothy, what’s wrong?”

Timothy looked at her, his face full of despair as he replied earnestly, “I have been such an idiot Anne and I haven’t been able to tell anyone, not even Lucy. If I tell you, you have to promise to keep my secret.”

Anne nodded her face full of concern and replied, “Of course.”

Timothy sighed deeply and continued, “ I thought Antonio was the answer to my dreams, his family owns many businesses and they were happy to have my ideas on how to run them and even put me in charge of a few. It was little things at first I didn’t notice, but when my shop was searched for stolen goods I started to wonder and putting two and two together I realised that they are criminals, oh Anne what have I got myself into? And now I am stuck, when I realised what kind of people they were I told them I wanted out, but it was too late. They told me that funny accidents can happen and that they wouldn’t want to see Lucy hurt, but they couldn’t guarantee her safely unless I was under their protection.”

An exclamation of surprise escaped Anne involuntarily.

Timothy continued “Now here I am a criminal myself, I won’t tell you what I was here to do. It disgusts me, but I have no choice. I can’t tell Lucy because she is so much safer not knowing. Oh Anne I am so glad I could tell you it’s been so hard carrying this around.”

He started to cry and Anne instinctively reached out to hold him. She cradled him in her arms whispering soothing words until he stopped crying. Then he reached up and touched her face and said, “I am so glad you’re my friend, I am not sure what I would do without you.”

He stared into her eyes and without planning it; in the aftermath of all his gratefulness to Anne he leaned forward and kissed her.
